food dye + corn starch + water = sidewalk paint!

we experimented how much water/cornstarch was needed to make the best paint. 

then it evolved to a study on color mixing...

sonny discovered that by adding more cornstarch than water he could make a gooey mixture...

hardly anyone actually painted but the results were far better than what i had imagined!

egg time...

we had fun comparing the color results of white eggs versus brown eggs and creating different patterns using rubber bands and stickers. i was hoping we would have had time to experiment dying eggs naturally but i'll have to save that for next year!

celebrating color...

we took advantage of having an all girl class and created a beauty parlor and bow shop!

the girls painted their faces...

as a continuation of our own holi, or festival of color, we made a color graph and color wheel (on cupcakes!).

we experimented making different colors with turmeric (for yellow), cranberry juice (for pink) and blueberry juice for purple but weren't very successful- in the end we had to use regular food dye...

P is for playdough..

we've been focusing on the letter P and since valentine's day was coming up we made pink playdough! rather than using a mixing bowl we used ziplock bags so everyone could work independently at the same time- also it helps strengthen their hands and fingers. i labeled the ingredients and made some "recipe cards" for each child. 

i had the kids study their cards and then match the ingredients on the recipe cards to the ingredients on the table.

we added cherry kool-aid for color and scent...

yellow + blue = green!

i put yellow and blue on opposite sides of a piece of paper and had the kids use their paintbrushes to make a new color- green! afterwards we added a piece of text that read "yellow + blue = green",  introducing math symbols that they can read. we also mixed paint in baggies and had fun making making different shapes and letters with our fingers. later i cut a hole in the baggies and the kids used the paint to color our dinosaur mural!

our dinosaur ended up being a great ice breaker for mia's first day at school!
