celebrating hanukkah and kwanzaa...

we read hanukkah! by roni schotter and talked about how hanukkah is celebrated through different family traditions. we discussed the menorah- they particularily loved learning about the shamash candle...

we painted popsicle sticks and made the star of david...

the kids took turns peeling their own potatoes in a (failed) attempt at making latkes. i learned that latkes aren't as easy to make as i thought! i think i'll stick to buying them at brooklyn larder...

we read seven candles for kwanzaa by andrea davis pinkney and discussed the different ways kwanzaa is celebrated. we poured water into our kikombe cha umoja (unity cup) and each took a sip from it...

we played mancala...

...and made a kinara, a special candle holder that represents the seven principles of kwanzaa (although the kids preferred to make a menorah so in the end two candles were added!).
