the post that was almost forgotten...

we spent a lot of time on various math projects while at sonny's. we practiced measuring the length of different objects with our handmade rulers and estimated how many cups of water it would take to fill a cake pan, which the kids enjoyed. this also allowed them to practice pouring water into a small cup, as well as cleaning up after any spills.
as a way to get more familiar with double digits, we've been using our sandpaper numbers to see that when we add a zero to a number it becomes a ten.
we've also been playing different math games...
this game requires a bit of an explanation- i called out a shape or number which the kids would find, crumple up and try to get it into the trash bin.
we read how can do you know what time it is? and talked about the importance of time and clocks. we discussed the different ways people would tell the time without the help of clocks. we experimented with making water clocks, which was a bit tricky. the kids had fun guessing how much water would drop into the jars after various lengths of time.
we used pictures to make a timeline of our day. some liked making accurate time lines, while some liked making them silly- which everyone found hysterical...
