journaling.

the day after going to the american folk art museum's quilt show we went to a coffee shop to sketch some designs for quilts of our own...

mia took to drawing some delicious-looking cupcakes and brownies- a girl after my own heart!

a fiona and theo day...

we listened to saint-saëns' carnival of the animals and the kids mimed which animal they thought each movement was- getting the elephant right away!
it was difficult to get a proper shot of them!
we also worked on our earth day piñatas...

flower power at RAD...

while the kids enjoyed observational drawing, they loooved being able to examine the flowers with not just their eyes, but hands as well...
...or study them under our magnifying glass.
we planted sprouting seeds and were delighted when they sprouted over the weekend!
working on our garden mural...

ways of seeing...

we've started working on observational art. some of the kids have been more interested than others but it's something i have high hopes for...

i recently put out a step by step "how to draw a chick" book. it's been extremely successful!

various art activities...

we mixed food dye and table salt and used it to make different designs...
mia did this heart (shown above) completely on her own!

we're still having fun with our shrinky dinks!

experimenting with colors...

we spent some time revisiting mouse paint and discussing what happens when certain colors are mixed together.
for snack time we used food coloring to make different colored cream cheese
we also painted with shaving cream (a great sensory activity) and afterwards had fun exploring the different textures of the shaving cream. water was accidentally spilled onto the table which worked to our advantage as it demonstrated the concept of cause and effect and changing states of matter. some areas were runny and others were more dense...
we are so sad theo will be leaving us! everyone has been talking about wanting to go to india with theo. we decided to make him a valentine as he will be missing our valentine's day party. the kids then made individual cards for theo, everyone making sure to include his favorite color green and adding a batman symbol (another favorite of theo's).
